Bodysuits & Leotards
Bodysuits (or leotards, unitards) should be well-fitted, not too loose, and offer the dancer a full range of motion comfortably when worn. Bodysuits may be black or pink, though generally black is the preferred colour for jazz, tap and musical theatre. It is encouraged for dancers to wear bodysuits with some form of a sleeve, and for bodysuits to have a fully or almost fully covered back. Bodysuits with skirts attached are generally not recommended for several reasons. Skirts attached to bodysuits are often unsuitably short, bodysuits often require washing more frequently than skirts, and skirts generally take longer to outgrow for young dancers than bodysuits. If girls prefer to wear skirts to capris, it is advisable to purchase a skirt separately from the bodysuit.
It is strongly advised that parents and/or dancers check the washing requirements of bodysuits before purchasing. Most are machine washable, but some are only machine washable on delicate or hand wash cycles.

Skirts & Capris
Skirts should be comfortable and allow for full range of motion, be securely held in place (either by an elastic waistband or by proper tying) and should be no shorter than the top of the knee. Skirts may be longer, but should be no longer than the top of the ankle. Skirts may be of chiffon, or opaque material, however material should be light and flowy to ensure unimpeded movement during dance practice. For particularly light chiffon, a double layered skirt is recommended. Two-length skirts (skirts where the skirt is shorter on one side than the other) are permitted, provided the shortest side is of appropriate length. Skirts may be black or pink, though generally black is the preferred colour for jazz, tap and musical theatre.
Capris should be well-fitted, not too loose and allow for a full range of motion during class. Capris should be mid-calf length for optimal comfort and practice. Capris should be neutral in colour, such as black, grey, brown, or navy. Capris should not be pink. Capris may be worn to any class.
It is strongly advised that parents and/or dancers check the washing requirements of skirts and capris before purchasing. Most are machine washable, but some are only machine washable on delicate or hand wash cycles.

Tights
Tights are generally available from any dance retailer, and are also widely available online. However, not all tights are made equal! Tights should be durable and thick enough to last for many practice sessions but not so thick as to be too hot to practice in or hinder the dancer’s full range of motion.
My personal recommendation, and the tights that I have always danced in is Mondor, either from their extra soft (children’s tights and adult tights) or durable line of tights. Mondor is a Canadian dance company that makes top quality dance products, but especially excellent tights. They are often available in brick and mortar stores, and online from their website. One word of caution about Mondor - do not purchase their products off Amazon, as Mondor products are marked up to an extreme degree from third party sellers. Mondor tights should be purchased in light tan (or other skin tone approximate) for jazz, tap and musical theatre classes, and in ballet pink for ballet classes.
Other brands are, of course, acceptable, but my personal experience has been that Mondor tights last season after season while maintaining both their colour and comfort.
Additional Retailers Online
If you are interested in exploring additional options for your dance attire, online retailers certainly extend beyond Amazon. Here are a few that you may find offer some alternatives to the suggestions provided above.
Note: I have made an effort to include only retailers on whose products list I have found at least a few items that would be class appropriate, but many items are not.
